On February 15, 2017, the Partnership to Improve Patient Care (PIPC) held an 'Advocacy 101' webinar with PCORI ambassadors and patient advocates to help explain the Institute’s pending re-authorization and offer suggestions on how stakeholders can support patient-centered research. Topics covered in the webinar include a background related to PCORI’s creation, the legislative process that we anticipate for reauthorization in 2019, and appropriate tactics for outreach to legislators to ensure they understand the personal impact that PCORI’s work has on patients and other stakeholders. A complete recording of the event and the slides used in the presentation can be found here.
2. Mutual Mentorship: Patient-Partnered Care Starts at the Patient-CEO Level
Congratulations to PIPC member Donna Cryer, co-author of an article in Quality Management in Health Care explaining, “To truly change from a check-the-box approach to patient-centered care to a culture-centered approach that focuses on patient-centered thinking and habits, hospital CEOs and other leadership team members would do well to add a patient mentor to their personal development program… The patient mentor model can elevate the quality and capacity of the CEO and, in turn, the health system, ushering in an age of patient-partnered care that is both deemed high quality by patients and family members and demonstrated as workable in the culture, clinical, and operational workflow of a health care system. The mentorship creates a sustained set of attitudes, behaviors, framing questions, and guiding principles for executives to implement personal and institution wide practices that respect and benefit patients, foster meaningful innovation, and enable continued adaptation to an increasingly consumer-driven health care landscape.” Click here to view the article (subscription only).

4. STAT: Digital Strategies for Patient Engagement
STAT: “So what does a great patient engagement program platform look like? It provides consistent high-touch interactions across channels (e.g., companion app, portal, phone, text, and chat). It enables the care network to collaborate with HCPs, families and other care team members. It provides a vehicle for internal and external data analysis to bring unique insights into patient treatment and interactions and demonstrate real-world evidence.” Click here to view the article.
5. PCORI Blog: The Role of African-Americans in Reducing Health Disparities
In a new post on The PCORI Blog, Executive Director Joe V. Selby, MD, MPH, comments, “The patient voice is integral to all of the work PCORI does, and we try to incorporate as many voices as we can from different racial, geographic, and socioeconomic groups. This is particularly important for African Americans, who have been underrepresented in medical research in the past...[Neely Williams] says, ‘PCORI engages patients in meaningful, respectful ways that allow them to feel like not a subject, but a part of the solution to the problem they're facing.’” Click here to view the article.
6. STAT: What Is Real-World Evidence, and Why Do We Need It?
Julie C. Locklear, PharmD, MBA commented in STAT last week, “As the discussion about getting drugs to the marketplace continues, getting the information and the evidence right is critical. If we can do this, and do this successfully, we might one day be able to increase access to the right drugs for the right patients at the right time. Then we'll have better value for the dollars spent and most importantly, we'll be working to try and improve the health and lives of millions of patients.” Click here to view the article.
