The FDA is hosting a public meeting on Patient-Focused Drug Development for Chronic Pain on July 9. “FDA is interested in hearing patients’ perspectives on chronic pain, views on treatment approaches, and challenges or barriers to accessing treatments for chronic pain. FDA is particularly interested in hearing from patients who experience chronic pain that is managed with analgesic medications such as opioids, acetaminophen, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), antidepressants; other medications; and non-pharmacologic interventions or therapies. The questions that will be asked of patients and patient representatives at the meeting are listed below, organized by topic. For each topic, a brief initial patient panel discussion will begin the dialogue. This will be followed by a facilitated discussion inviting comments from other patients and patient representatives in the audience. Webcast participants will also have an opportunity to provide input through webcast comments.” Click here to register.
2. PCORI Video: Mentorship and Training to Improve Patient Engagement
Elena Rios, President and CEO of the National Hispanic Medical Association, says her organization is using PCORI funding to expand mentorship and training opportunities for its faculty interested in patient-centered outcomes research. “The National Hispanic Medical Association has been involved with PCORI through our foundation, the National Hispanic Health Foundation which does research training to be able to identify senior faculty to mentor junior faculty who are all engaged in Hispanic health research with patient engagement. What we’ve done is provided skill based trainings over webinar and also training at our national conference.” Click here to watch the video.
3. Patient EngagementHIT: Top Challenges Impacting Patient Access to Healthcare
In an article for Patient EngagementHIT, Sara Health writes that health care organizations must into convenient care options and other patient services to drive more patient access to healthcare. “Connecting patients with the right care at the right time is an important value-based care principle. When a patient can easily access a primary care or wellness visit, she may see a diminished likelihood of developing a more concerning illness down the line. Healthcare organizations need to have the right patient-centered mechanisms in place that ensure patients can easily access those care services.” Click here to read the article.
4. Fiercehealthcare: It’s Time to Move to 'Value 2.0' in Healthcare
In an article for FierceHealthcare, Mark Linthicum discusses the problems with measuring the "value" in value-based payment arrangements. “Cost effectiveness, they say, implies that you can quantify what someone’s health is worth, or that someone’s livelihood is less valuable if they have a disability. Patients and patient groups accuse present methods of painting with too broad a brush, distilling patients down to calculated averages. The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) has prohibited the use of cost-effectiveness analysis, and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has thus far barred cost-effectiveness analysis in coverage decisions. Value is a matter of perspective, and no patient is average. As stakeholders across healthcare struggle with and refine the process of determining value, differing perspectives will trigger fierce debate, with some arguing that cost-effectiveness analysis should never have a place in a value-based health system.” Click here to read the article.
5. Forbes: Canaries in the Coal Mine
Gary Price and Tim Norbeck stress the need for a patient-centered electronic medical record (EMR) in an article for Forbes. “Understandably, health systems which have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in technology which captures every billable penny and literally will not allow care to proceed until every box satisfying regulators and payers has been checked, may not be eager to challenge the EMR industry to do better. It is far easier to pursue a tougher canary. I would argue that it is imperative for the health of our physicians, the quality of our medical care, and yes, even the efficiency and costs of the care we deliver together, that the current EMR interface be radically reformed. It has to be patient-centered at the point of care, not primarily designed to satisfy regulators. It has to make everyone on the healthcare team’s work easier and more efficient, not provide an obstacle to care or needlessly delay it.” Click here to read the article.
