PIPC Chairman Responds to Bloomberg Op-Ed on PCORI

1/29/2014

PIPC Chairman Tony Coelho issued the following response to a recent op-ed published in Bloomberg by Dr. Peter Orszag, former director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB).

Dr. Orszag reveals in his critique of PCORI the very conceit the Institute was designed to avoid – a research agenda designed by “the experts” to cut costs, instead of an agenda shaped by patients and doctors to improve care.   Rather than pursue a research agenda as defined by an insular group of experts in Washington, PCORI was set up to engage patients, caregivers and the publicly directly, and give them a real voice in decision-making, in order to ensure that the Institute was studying the questions that matter most.

PIPC Patient Blog: Mark Perriello

The American Association of People with Disabilities is a founding member of the Partnership to Improve Patient Care (PIPC), and continue to support the patient-centered principles that drive PIPC’s work.  We were pleased to see the introduction of “The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Act of 2009” and even more pleased to see the Institute finally created by Congress.  The AAPD supports the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute’s (PCORI) patient-centered approach to comparative effectiveness research (CER) and the important provisions written into the law which will ensure a continued focus on patient and provider needs and better healthcare quality.  As stated so eloquently by PIPC’s Chairman Tony Coelho, we also recognize that access to treatment options is imperative to fulfill the promise of patient-centered CER to improve the quality of health care.

Chairman's Corner: New Opportunities for Patient-Centered CER

1/2/2014

As I look back at 2013, and ahead to 2014, I’m convinced that the principles guiding the Partnership to Improve Patient Care (PIPC) are more important than ever. PIPC was created to raise awareness about the value of well-designed comparative clinical effectiveness research, the important role of continued medical innovation as part of the solution to cost and quality challenges in health care, and the need to ensure that comparative clinical effectiveness research is centered on patient and provider needs to improve healthcare decision-making.  In the year ahead, we’ll face new opportunities and challenges in advancing policies that support these goals
