1. PCORI Blog: Building Our Blueprint for Dissemination and Implementation
In a post on the PCORI Blog, Dr. Anne Beal, Deputy Executive Director and Chief Officer for Engagement comments, “We are creating an action plan for the dissemination and implementation of our research findings. And, as is our practice in determining which research to fund, we're seeking input from a broad array of experts on how to pursue dissemination activities in the most effective way. As the next activity in the development of the action plan, PCORI will issue a request for proposals (RFP) to uncover critical information to guide our overall approach.  We expect to release the RFP by August 31 and announce award recipients by November 30.” Click here to view the blog post.

2. PCORI Shifts Focus to Dissemination Of Research Findings
Gregory Twachtman of The Pink Sheet reports, “One problem that PCORI will be looking to solve is developing dissemination and implementation methods that can have a broad application. ‘We know that sometimes some strategies work in some situations for some quality gaps or implementation gaps in some settings,’ [Brian Mittman] said. ‘They don't tend to work in others. We've yet to achieve a small set of findings or strategies or discover a small set of strategies that seem to be effective over time, over place, over problems.’” Click here to view the article.
3. PCORI Blog: Conversations with the Latino/Hispanic Community
PCORI’s Romana Hasnain-Wynia and Sue Sheridan recently commented on the The PCORI Blog, “The roundtables not only provided a chance for the participants to educate us but gave us the opportunity to point out that we already fund several projects focused on Hispanic/Latino health concerns. One project studies group-support approaches for Latina cancer survivors and their caregivers. Another measures the impact of three approaches to helping young-adult Latinas and parents of adolescent Latinas make decisions about the HPV vaccine.” Click here to view the blog post.

4. Webinar: Using Evidence to Improve Patient Outcomes: Perspectives from Decision Makers
On Tuesday, August 20, Academy Health will host a webinar entitled Using Evidence to Improve Patient Outcomes: Perspectives from Decision Makers.  According to the event information, “This webinar will present ways decision makers are adapting to and utilizing electronic health data (EHD) from comparative effectiveness research (CER), patient-centered outcomes research (PCOR), and quality improvement (QI) studies to inform medical decision making. Given the recent explosion in the availability of EHD and increased opportunities to conduct CER, PCOR, and QI, it is important to discuss how findings from this research can be used to inform clinical practice, health systems initiatives, and policymaking, giving new evidence of which treatments work best for whom, under what conditions.”  Click here for more information and to register for the webinar.

5. Video: Providers Can Engage Patients in Making Informed Decisions
In a video published by The American Journal of Managed Care, Dr. Peter Goldbach, Chief Medical Officer at Health Dialog, says providers must engage their patients by communicating information about their health in efficient ways. Dr Goldbach says, “The most critical interaction in healthcare is that between a doctor and their patient. The more informed a patient is, the more successful that interaction will be.” Click here to view the video.

6. NEJM: Opinion: Toward Patient-Centered Drug Development in Oncology
Dr. Ethan Basch, writes in The New England Journal of Medicine, “The FDA has taken several recent steps toward encouraging inclusion of the patient perspective in drug development. Ideally, moving forward, whenever representatives of a pharmaceutical company and a regulatory agency sit down to discuss a product-development program, they will ask the same question my patients ask of me: ‘How does this product make people feel?’”  Click here to view the article.
