1. Save the Date: PIPC’s Patient Empowerment Webinar
Please join PIPC for an innovative webinar next Tuesday, January 20 at 2:00pm EST to discuss the importance of patient empowerment.  As lawmakers in Washington seek to build a “patient-centered healthcare system,” hear from real patients and health policy experts who will examine what decisions are being made, and how it could impact people like you.  Additional details will be available on the PIPC website soon! Kindly RSVP to [email protected]

2. PCORI Seeking Nominations to Advisory Panels

As a reminder, the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) announced that it is accepting nominations for its Advisory Panels for terms beginning in 2015. We urge you to help PCORI identify great candidates!
Specifically, it is seeking nominations to fill:
• Up to four positions on the Assessment of Prevention Diagnosis, and Treatment Options panel;
• Up to five positions on the Improving Healthcare Systems panel;
• Up to six positions on the Addressing Disparities panel;
• Up to six positions on the Patient Engagement panel, including caregivers and patient organizations; and
• One position on the Rare Diseases panel.

The Panels are seeking patients (including patient representatives and caregivers), clinicians, researchers, industry representatives, and payers to advise PCORI on the issues listed above. Terms are three years except for on the Rare Diseases panel where they are one to two years. Panelists are expected to follow the PCORI's Conflict of Interest Policy and to attend two to four in-person meetings in Washington, D.C. and additional meetings remotely. Applications are due February 6, 2015.  Click here to view the announcement.

3. Health Affairs: Implementing Value-Based Payment In Practice

Last week, Susan Browning of Health Affairs commented, “[C]ompensation and incentives must be viewed within broader objectives of value based care—cost and quality—rather than simpler data points, which tend to yield an oversimplification of the model's goals. And physicians and hospitals must be brought more closely into the discussion to facilitate more sustainable process redesign.” Click here to view the full article.

4. Forbes: How Can We Encourage Participation in Clinical Trials?

In Forbes recently, Judy Stone said, “[S]pecific disease advocates and patient-centered research sites, like Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) and their clinical trial branch, PCORnet, American Association for Cancer Research, Rare Diseases Clinical Research Network (RDCRN), and alliances like the Clinical Research Forum, are important resources in educating and encouraging clinical trial participation. Hopefully, with more engaged and vocal advocacy groups, we will see a boost in clinical trial enrollment and effective new drugs.” Click here to view the full article.
