The American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry has published a white paper co-authored by the Susan Peschin of the Alliance for Aging Research and Dilip Jeste of the Stein Institute that summarizes the current state of knowledge on specific mental illness and substance abuse concerns in older Americans, identifies research gaps, and presents recommendations for health education and public policy. “While there is no one answer for every disease, individualized and person-centered care will have the greatest impact in promoting wellness and longevity. The take-home message is that, while there is still much work to be done, there are many actions that communities, clinicians, and families can take right now to help ensure the latter years of their loved one’s lives are spent in happiness, not hopelessness.” Click here to read the white paper.
2. Request for Comment: AHRQ Library of Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Resources
AHRQ is seeking feedback from researchers, clinicians, policymakers, consumers, and others on its comprehensive Web-based Library of Patient-Centered Outcomes Research (PCOR) resources. “Feedback will be used to assess and potentially revise the layout, design, and content of the library of resources. The library, developed through investments by public, private, nonprofit, and academic organizations, includes PCOR findings and evidence-based tools that have appeared in the published literature, as well as studies and projects in progress. As outlined in a recent Federal Register notice, AHRQ seeks input on how well the library of PCOR resources and its materials meet the needs of users.” Click here for details. Deadline: Friday June 29, 2018.
3. PCORI Podcast: Asking Questions, Researching Answers to Help Improve Medical Care
In an episode of “HealthLink on Air” PCORI Executive Director Joe Selby sat down for a discussion on PCORI’s patient engagement strategies during the research process. “Patients, health care providers and medical insurers are among the groups who may have a question about medical care that cannot be answered with existing research. The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute tackles such questions. The institute's executive director, Joe Selby, MD, explains how the organization's research works to involve and benefit the doctors, patients, caregivers and others affected by a particular medical issue.” Click here to listen to the podcast.
4. Video: It All Starts with Patient Engagement
Ellie Dohoney discusses how her organization, Research!America, focuses on patient engagement in their work. “I think patient engagement actually is the starting point for our efforts at Research!America. If you think about what determines value in medical progress, its relevance. So, it comes back to what serves a patient? What’s in the best interest of them in terms of place, time, location, and impact." Click here to watch the video.
5. Patient EngagementHIT: Walgreens, Humana Partner for Senior Patient Access to Care
In an article for Patient EngagementHIT, Sara Health reports a new partnership between Walgreens and Humana that seeks to drive patient access to care and other wellness services for Medicare beneficiaries. “The clinics will approach patient care using a holistic, patient-centric model. Clinicians aim to move past acute clinical care and work to support chronic disease management. Providers will be tasked with building strong patient-provider relationships that allow providers to deliver targeted, person-centered care to patients. The care sites will also deliver patient outreach and education services. Each clinic will host Humana employees who will work on healthcare navigation, conduct diabetes tests, or identify local support groups for patients. These efforts are aimed at delivering a holistic care experience, Walgreens and Humana asserted. These clinics will not necessarily look like a typical retail clinic, but instead will serve as a medical home for patients.” Click here to read the article.
6. HealthTech Magazine: How Telemedicine Helps Healthcare Organizations Improve Patient Engagement and Satisfaction
In an article for HealthTech Magazine, Brian Eastwood notes that virtual visits don’t just save time, they improve patient quality of life and create more meaningful clinician connections. “Telemedicine technology is already at work improving the patient and provider experience in many innovative organizations. At the Cleveland Clinic, the telemedicine program encompasses a wide range of technology — from connected devices to virtual visits to remote imaging transfers — which are used inside the hospital and in a patient’s home, says Dr. Peter Rasmussen, the organization’s medical director of distance health. ‘The Cleveland Clinic has four pillars of operations: patient access, the patient experience, patient safety and patient retention,’ he says. ‘Telemedicine helps us in all of those regards. We believe that every caregiver can use some kind of digital tech in care delivery.’ For the Cleveland Clinic, Nemours and other healthcare organizations, telemedicine can play a key role in improving both patient engagement — the extent to which patients participate in their own care — as well as patient satisfaction — the degree to which patients recommend an organization’s services. 7. FDA Meeting for Patient-Focused Drug Development on Chronic Pain
The FDA is hosting a public meeting on Patient-Focused Drug Development for Chronic Pain on July 9. “FDA is interested in hearing patients’ perspectives on chronic pain, views on treatment approaches, and challenges or barriers to accessing treatments for chronic pain. FDA is particularly interested in hearing from patients who experience chronic pain that is managed with analgesic medications such as opioids, acetaminophen, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), antidepressants; other medications; and non-pharmacologic interventions or therapies. The questions that will be asked of patients and patient representatives at the meeting are listed below, organized by topic. For each topic, a brief initial patient panel discussion will begin the dialogue. This will be followed by a facilitated discussion inviting comments from other patients and patient representatives in the audience. Webcast participants will also have an opportunity to provide input through webcast comments.” Click here to register.
