1. Deadline Extension: PCORI Advisory Panel Applications/Nominations

The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) announced last week that they are extending the nomination and application deadlines for PCORI’s Advisory Panels to 5:00 pm Thursday, March 31.  “PCORI is advertising openings on sevenAdvisory Panels. We invite you to share this announcement OR nominate individuals in your network that would be excellent candidates for these panels… If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us at [email protected]... Any organization wishing to make nominations should send the following materials, compiled into a single PDF, to [email protected]: nomination letter, CV/resume of the nominee(s), and brief bio(s). Additional supporting materials may be included, such as letters of endorsement. PCORI may need additional information from the nominee, in which case we will contact the nominee directly. PCORI reviews all applications and nominations with an eye towards developing balanced, inclusive panels. We encourage nominating organizations to review our application fields and consider presenting as robust a portrait of their nominee(s) as possible.” Click here for additional information on PCORI’s review and selection process.

2. Survey: Impact of Comparative Effectiveness Research on Health Care Decision-Making Still Three to Five Years in the Future

As outlined in a press release last week, “The National Pharmaceutical Council (NPC) released the results of its annual survey of stakeholder views on comparative effectiveness research (CER) and the environment for health care decision-making. The survey, now in its sixth year, found that stakeholders continue to have a high perception of the importance of CER, but believe that its full impact is still three to five years in the future...‘Each year, we continue to move forward in a positive direction, yet the full impact of CER on health care decision-making remains just down the road,’ said NPC President Dan Leonard.” Click here to view the press release.

3. NQF Announces a Call for Nominations for its Measure Applications Partnership

The National Quality Forum (NQF) today announced they are seeking nominations for organizations and individual subject matter experts to serve on the Measure Applications Partnership (MAP). MAP is a public-private partnership that provides input to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) on the selection of performance measures. NQF says it is looking for nominees who are knowledgeable about “post-acute and long-term care, various types of providers (including safety net), end-stage renal disease, consumer advocacy, disability, group healthcare purchasing, population health, health IT, patient safety, state Medicaid programs, and health insurers of all sizes.”  Nominations may be submitted here. Further application information and requirements may be found in the Call for Nominations available here.

4. Health Affairs Blog: The Economics Of Paying For Value

In a post last week on Health Affairs Blog, Harvard University researchers Nancy Beaulieu, Michael Chernew, Soren Kristensen, and Meredith Rosenthal comment, “The notion that the American health care system should transition from paying for volume to paying for value has become nearly ubiquitous. There is a broad consensus that health care providers should be paid more if they deliver higher value care (i.e. care that results in substantial health gains per dollar spent). These beliefs have led to a proliferation of value-based payment programs in both public and private sectors... The details of existing value or quality-based payment programs vary enormously and without regard to any conceptual framework. For example, they vary in the size of incentives and the measures used.” Click here to view the blog post.

5. PCORI Welcomes New AHRQ Acting Director Sharon Arnold to Board of Governors

In a press release last week, “The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) welcomed Sharon Arnold, PhD, newly named Acting Director of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), to PCORI's Board of Governors...‘Dr. Arnold's work creating a framework for the dissemination of patient-centered outcomes research findings will bring timely experience to our Board as PCORI enters a period of increasing dissemination of findings in its sixth year,’ said PCORI Executive Director Joe Selby, MD, MPH. ‘We look forward to working with Sharon, whose vast experience will make her a valuable member of our Board.’” Click here to view the press release.

6. PCORI Blog: Strategies to Encourage Good Nutrition and Healthy Weight

As PCORI’s Cathy Gurgol, MS, Maryan Zirkle, MD, MS, MA and Nicole Pettenati, MS wrote last week on The PCORI Blog, “What are the most effective ways to guide people to achieve and maintain healthy weights? Simply advising people to consume fewer calories often isn't enough. Any weight control method has to fit with a person's physical condition, lifestyle, and preferences. That approach is what PCORI brings to all the research we fund, including studies on ways to improve weight management. PCORI-funded studies seek to produce evidence that's relevant in the real world by involving patients and clinicians throughout the research—from developing the questions that studies ask to sharing the findings.” Click here to view the blog post.
