Sandra Boodman published a piece in The Washington Post highlighting the importance of effective patient-doctor communication. “Because of the duration and impact of Karp’s symptoms and because her scans showed no sign of arthritis — which would require a hip replacement — Wolff proposed reconstructing both labra with tissue from a cadaver and smoothing the femoral head to ensure a proper fit. Karp said that when Wolff told her what was wrong and that her problem was fixable, she felt a mixture of disbelief and excitement. ‘ remember calling my husband on the way out of the office,’ she said. After getting a second opinion, Karp scheduled surgery with Wolff, who performs the 2½ -hour outpatient procedure about 300 times annually. She underwent surgery on her left hip in January; her right hip was fixed in early March. ‘She’s done fantastic,’ Wolff said. ‘The most common thing we see is people trying to push themselves too hard and too quickly’ after surgery.” Click here to read the article.
2. Health Affairs: A Consumer-Centered Framework For Quality: How Do We Get There From Here?
Ann Hwang notes in a Health Affairs blog that when it comes to healthcare, consumers aren’t able to easily able to obtain the few, key summative, consumer-facing measures that could help them understand the quality of their care. “...With sufficient resources and training, consumer leaders and advocates could help the quality measurement enterprise by shaping the creation of a slate of consumer-oriented measures, as well as to push for their implementation and use. It's time for a new paradigm in quality measure development, one that focuses on generating consumer-centered measures, rather than proliferating ever more measures of production.” Click here to read the blog.
3. PCORnet Joins Forces with Sentinel to Link Data for More Robust Public Health Research
Last Thursday, PCORnet announced it was teaming up with Sentinel to promote a more robust public health data network. “...‘We are delighted to be teaming up with the FDA, the Sentinel Initiative, and Reagan-Udall Foundation for this exciting and promising initiative that speaks to the future of patient-centered research and PCORnet's value with researchers and other stakeholders,’ said Joe Selby, M.D., M.P.H., executive director of PCORI. ‘Collaborations like this will be essential if we're going to transform traditional clinical research, conduct definitive studies, and put people and other healthcare stakeholders in the driver's seat to enable better informed healthcare decisions.’” Click here to read the press release.
4. BioPharma DIVE: Can Value-Based Deals Work If Patients Don't Take the Drug?
Ned Pagliarulo reports on one of the most persistent challenges in drug marketing: ensuring patients correctly adhere to their prescription regimens. “...Deals tying adherence to payment, though, have motivated some payers to develop more innovative approaches to identify which patients are most likely to be non-adherent...‘Adherence is a great value,’ said Steve Miller, chief medical officer of Express Scripts, to BioPharma Dive. ‘We put a guarantee around it. It made us innovate. We developed predictive models around adherence for hepatitis C.’” Click here to read the article.
5. Morning Consult: Senate Panel Approves Bill Revamping Medicare for Chronically Ill Patients
Jon Reid reports in Morning Consult on the value-based insurance design promoted in new legislation out of the Senate Finance Committee. “The Senate Finance Committee on Thursday unanimously advanced legislation aimed at improving care for people with chronic illnesses...Under the legislation, Medicare Advantage plans in all states would be allowed to test a new payment model from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services called value-based insurance design, which gives companies financial incentives to be more efficient.” Click here to read the article.
