Marc Boutin explains that delivering “truly patient-centered results” involves providing individuals with the information they need to select the treatment most closely meets with their specific needs in STAT News. “...Instead of focusing solely on investigator-initiated research ideas, PCORI focuses on research that patients, family caregivers, and other stakeholders have identified as meaningful, relevant, and useful to them. The end result, patient-centered outcomes research, can help inform the practice of medicine, the delivery of care, the design of health insurance, and how we develop new treatments to truly meet the needs of patients and their families. PCORI's emphasis on patient engagement has created a sea change that is rippling through the entire health care continuum.” Click here to read the article.
2. OP-Ed: Now That’s a Patient-Centered Value Framework
In NJSpotlight, Debbie Hart and Robert Goldberg criticize value frameworks that steer patients to the least expensive products, rather than steering them to affordable care that is tailored to their specific needs. NJ Spotlightcomments that increasing the number of healthy people working, going to school, investing, and contributing to society will actually save healthcare costs and ensure a robust insurance system.” Click here to read the op-ed.
3. The PCORI Blog: Pathways to Partnership – Helping Patients and Researchers Communicate
Bill Shuttleworth, and Pari Noskin stress the need for effective patient-researcher communication in The PCORI Blog. “...We want to change this dynamic and improve patients' health and experience. Our goal is to improve brain and behavioral health for all New Mexicans through research better informed by, and more responsive to, their needs. Through a Eugene Washington PCORI Engagement Award, we implemented a program to improve communication and collaboration skills between two groups: University of New Mexico researchers and clinicians, and community stakeholder groups of patients, family members, advocates, and others. 4. Learn About the ACR Arthritis Foundation Patient Representative Program
The Arthritis Foundation is partnering with the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) to pilot an Arthritis Foundation Patient Representative program. “...Encouraged and facilitated by entities like the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), academic and clinical professional societies are beginning to adopt more patient-engaged strategies as well, like the inclusion of patient representatives at annual meetings and scientific conferences. In 2017, the Arthritis Foundation is partnering with the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) to pilot an Arthritis Foundation Patient Representative program (#AFPatientReps), bringing a cadre of ten highly involved, engaged patients to attend and participate in #ACR17, the ACR/ARHP annual meeting.” Click here to read the blog.
5. Aging.com: Helping You Navigate Your Veteran Benefit Options
The National Council for Aging Care has published a guide that helps Veterans navigate the complexities of their benefit options. “The U.S. is seeing a growing number of seniors who are also armed services veterans. The current median age for living Americans who served in the Korean War is 69. The Vietnam veteran population makes for a new crop of seniors with special needs – including medical issues that sometimes do not present until years later. The latest U.S. Census brief puts the number of veterans over 65 at over 12.4 million. If you have served in the military during wartime, chances are that you’ve taken advantage of education programs, career resources, and home loans available to you. But while those life issues may be behind you, there is a host of other resources to know about in your retirement years.” Click here to view the guide.
6. CMS Releases RFI on New Direction for CMMI - Comments Due November 20!
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) issued a Request for Information (RFI) seeking insights on a new direction to promote patient-centered care and test market-driven reforms that empower beneficiaries as consumers, provide price transparency, increase choices and competition to drive quality, reduce costs, and improve outcomes. In response, the Chairman Tony Coelho of the Partnership to Improve Patient Care (PIPC) applauded CMS and Administrator Verma for making strong statements in support of patients and patient-centered care, and releasing an RFI to set a new direction for the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation that supports patients, caregivers and people with disabilities. PIPC has long advocated for CMMI to engage patients and people with disabilities early in the development of patient-centered demonstrations that have the potential to improve patient outcomes while lowering costs. As part of the effort to move CMMI in a new direction, Chairman Coelho urges CMMI to establish meaningful mechanisms for patients and people with disabilities to engage in the development of these models. He also urges CMS to develop meaningful patient-centeredness criteria that would enable CMMI and the public to determine whether APMs are truly putting patients first. PIPC is reviewing the RFI in more detail and looks forward to working with CMMI on a new direction that puts patients at the center. Additional information on PIPC’s recommendations for patient engagement and patient-centeredness at CMMI can be found here. Click here to view the RFI. Comments are due November 20, 2017.

In addition to these education and outreach sessions, we are also offering groups currently developing QPP quality measures an opportunity to share your proposed measures and measure concepts with CMS through a spotlight series.” Contact [email protected] if you are interested in participating.
