In a letter to the Institute for Clinical and Economic Review (ICER), the Partnership to Improve Patient Care (PIPC) submitted comments on ICER's draft evidence report on treatments for beta thalessemia.
The letter reiterates PIPC's concerns about many of ICER's modeling choices and their impact across studies, including ICER's use of the discriminatory quality-adjusted-life-years (QALY) metric. PIPC is also critical ICER's report ignoring the wider benefit of reduced demand on scarce health care resources, which overlooks a valuable facet of successful treatment of transfusion dependent beta thalassemia (TDBT).
"We continue to encourage ICER to reevaluate its modeling choices, particularly the use of the discriminatory QALY, in future studies," wrote PIPC Chair Tony Coelho. "We hope that our comments are useful to ICER in developing its final evidence report."
