The Partnership to Improve Patient Care (PIPC) compiled a list of patient-centered resources that policymakers can and should be using to inform their development of public policy. We know that groups representing patients and people with disabilities know the populations they serve better than anyone, and that patients and people with disabilities bring credible and insightful data to the table. We would very much appreciate you providing to us though this survey a list of the resources your organization is willing and able to provide to inform the development and implementation of new payment models, quality measures and shared decision-making tools. Hopefully, this work will facilitate more direct engagement of patients and people with disabilities in policymaking. Click here to fill out PIPC’s survey. 4. PCORI Blog: Engaging Clinicians in Patient-Centered Research
As PCORI’s Mira Grieser, MHS, Cathy Gurgol, MS and Susan Hildebrandt, comment on The PCORI Blog, “[A]s we all know, clinicians are already overwhelmed with the responsibilities their important jobs demand. To engage them in research, investigators must demonstrate how a project can benefit their practices and their patients. Below, we highlight three PCORI-funded projects that have used creative means to engage clinicians in their studies.” Click here to view the blog post.
5. Are Insurance Policies Saving Patients Money, or Keeping Them from the Treatment They Need?
A recent article in STAT highlights the potential impact of restricting patient access to the treatments suggested by their clinicians. “Dr. Steven D. Pearson, founder of the Institute for Clinical and Economic Review (ICER), a health care industry think tank, said that in situations in which two treatments would likely offer equal benefits, ‘most people would say it's reasonable to try the less expensive one first.’ But ‘the important nuance comes when there might be specific reasons where a patient or doctor feels like the more expensive drug would work better,’ he said. ‘So it all depends on what the harm would be if they tried the less expensive one first.’” Click here to view the article.
