The American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry has published a white paper co-authored by the Susan Peschin of the Alliance for Aging Research and Dilip Jeste of the Stein Institute that summarizes the current state of knowledge on specific mental illness and substance abuse concerns in older Americans, identifies research gaps, and presents recommendations for health education and public policy. “While there is no one answer for every disease, individualized and person-centered care will have the greatest impact in promoting wellness and longevity. The take-home message is that, while there is still much work to be done, there are many actions that communities, clinicians, and families can take right now to help ensure the latter years of their loved one’s lives are spent in happiness, not hopelessness.” Click here to read the white paper.
2. HealthLeaders: 6 Themes Driving Healthcare Leaders To Change
Philip Betbeze notes that an intense focus on patient-centered care is helping drive change in health care. A report featuring candid conversations with 24 industry leaders from a variety of healthcare subsectors shows broad agreement on six themes that should drive healthcare convergence and an improvement of the patient experience. To win, these subsectors must learn to collaborate, says the report. Authored by by privately held real estate firm Transwestern and IMEG, a design and consulting firm, the report features collected responses from a discussion among thought leaders at 24 healthcare-related organizations. ‘Healthcare by 2020 will be forced to be more patient-centered with an emphasis on convenience,’ said Amy Waer MD, vice dean of education and academic programs at the Texas A&M College of Medicine.” Click here read the article.
3. Patient EngagementHIT: Patient Engagement Technology Comes to Forefront in Healthcare
In an article for Patient EngagementHIT, Sara Health reports on a new International Data Corporation (IDC) report that highlights new patient engagement technology. “Specifically, patient engagement technologies are combining numerous patient-facing tools. Engagement tools have patient and healthcare navigation capabilities, support chronic disease management programs, and connect patients with their care using remote patient monitoring capabilities. Patient engagement technology has become commonplace in the healthcare place through the ubiquitous patient adoption of computers, smartphones, and mobile tablets, the report noted. Healthcare technologies are increasingly becoming more patient-facing, the report continued. Traditionally, leading patient engagement technologies have included patient portals or secure messaging tools. But these technologies have left the patient beholden to the provider.” Click here to read the article.

5. Video: It All Starts with Patient Engagement
Ellie Dohoney discusses how her organization, Research!America, focuses on patient engagement in their work. “I think patient engagement actually is the starting point for our efforts at Research!America.
