1. PIPC Joins Over 40 Organizations on Letter to ICER on Value Assessment Process
The Partnership to Improve Patient Care (PIPC) and over 40 organizations representing patients, people with disabilities and providers submitted a letter to the Institute for Clinical and Economic Review (ICER) in response to their request for input on their value assessment process. In the letter, the organizations stated, “Simply put, if we aren’t paying for care that patients’ value, we aren’t really paying for value-based care.”
PIPC Chairman Tony Coelho stated, “ It is my hope that ICER will give sincere and careful consideration to the input of all organizations representing patients and people with disabilities, many of which have direct experiences with ICER’s process and whose input would be very constructive. It is my hope that our concerns will not be dismissed as myths, but instead be given the consideration they deserve.”
Organizations representing patients and people with disabilities have expressed significant concerns about ICER’s valuation process and are pleased that ICER is accepting input. 2. Morning Consult: Cost-Cutting Proposals Could Cost Life Spans
In a recent op-ed published in Morning Consult, multiple myeloma patient Thomas Hardy discusses his concerns with the value framework touted by the Institute for Clinical and Economic Review (ICER). As he explains, “One of the biggest threats to a continuing flow of innovative treatments comes from an insurance industry-funded group called [ICER], its Midwest affiliate Comparative Effectiveness Public Advisory Council, and the policymakers who support them. We need them to do all they can to help patients like me — not just whatever they deem to be cost-effective. Instead, ICER is going after treatments for patients with multiple sclerosis, lung cancer and this fall they're even going after treatments for patients with psoriasis.” Click here to view the article.
In June 2016, Mr. Hardy commented on the PIPC Patient Blog about his perspectives on patient-centered care. “As patients, we support each other and share our knowledge about our journey that truly helps us weather the storm. We have mourned those who have lost the battle and marveled at their courage and tenacity. This is what being human is all about, I have learned. It's about supporting one another during tough times and coming together to help and aid others as they come to our aid in times of need. Families, friends, co-workers, are all affected by a diagnosis of cancer, and besides taking so much away, it gives us the opportunity to come together and do what we do best: act cooperatively when danger threatens... Therefore, I am appalled that a draconian cost-benefit efficacy analysis should inform any decisions regarding the ministration of the healing arts.” Click here to view the blog post.
3. Video: Dr. Alan Balch Explains the Difference Between Various Value Frameworks
In a recent video for the American Journal of Managed Care Alan Balch, PhD, CEO of the Patient Advocate Foundation explains that different value frameworks offer different things, as, explained that each framework has various other objectives in mind. In the video, Dr. Balch differentiates frameworks based upon whether their objectives reach individual or population-based levels. Click here to view the video.
4. Washington Examiner: President Obama's Proposed Price Controls Could Hurt Sick
According to a new article in the Washington Examiner, “By raking in insurance dollars, ICER is effectively snubbing some corporations to get in bed with others…ICER's ties to the insurance industry point to anything but an impartial observer. So does Pearson's admission that the lack of a government price-setting system is ‘a reflection of a political culture…hostile to considerations of cost-effectiveness in funding and insurance coverage decisions.’ Translation: Sick people need to stop fighting against price controls…” Click here to view the article.
5. Video: Concerns with Paying Patients for Adherence
Speaking in a video posted by the American Journal of Managed Care, Scott Breidbart, MD, MBA, chief clinical officer of EmblemHealth, explained that paying patients for adherence could be efficient when the payment initiatives are targeted towards members who have not shown to be adherent; however, he added that there are several limitations in paying for adherence, including the sustainability of the system and whether it will incentivize patients who are adherent to stop taking their medications.” Click here to view the video.
6. PCORI Blog: Taking on Childhood Obesity
A new post on The PCORI Blog highlights some of the work PCORI has funded to better understand, prevent, and treat pediatric obesity. One of our largest funded efforts is PEDSnet, a network with access to data from 5.1 million children—and growing. PEDSnet, which aims to find ways to provide the best medical care and best outcomes for children in all areas of health, has obesity as a major focus... Having so much data also enables research on relatively rare diseases in children, says Bailey, a specialist in clinical research data. Also, having data from many locations allows researchers to pinpoint practices that work better, or worse, in children’s health care.” Click here to view the blog post.
